Students will receive class theory and hands-on training in the following areas: Onboard diagnostics related to engine/transmission powertrain computerized control systems, anti-lock brake and traction control, air bag safety procedures.  Scanners, digital multi-meters and other diagnostic tools will be used.  Students will have training on shop vehicles provided by MCTI in regards to electrical malfunctions, check engine light issues, chassis lighting problems and ABS/traction control concerns.  Shop vehicles will have real-time problems inserted into the vehicles and the student will have to repair different types of circuits.  The students will be using industry service information (all data) related to wiring schematics and repair procedures (Flow Charts).   The students will be taught the correct ways on repairing wiring, soldering, heat shrinking and crimping techniques.  Students are encouraged to work on their personal vehicles.

Students will learn the background and history of the HVAC/R industry, physical and chemical properties of materials, terminologies in energies (heating, cooling, thermal dynamics, electrical and light), refrigerant cycle, refrigerants and refrigeration systems, HVAC/R toolbox, and HVAC/R measuring devices. Brazing, charging techniques, recovery and evacuation and safety procedures will be taught. Students will also learn the proper use of a four-valve refrigerant manifold, the maintenance and proper use of a vacuum pump system, the practice of refrigerant and copper tubing braising with oxyacetylene torch, and destructive joint testing and inspection. Students will also receive hands-on practice using high-pressure nitrogen cylinders, various regulators (pressure and purge), proper use of the nitrogen system in HVAC/R technology and other HVAC/R methods. EPA 608 Universal Training included.

Students will receive instruction in preparing steel for welding using oxyacetylene cutting equipment, high speed grinders, and power wire brushes. Using 7018 and 6010 electrodes, students will also receive instruction in preparing and welding fillet and groove welds on steel plate in the flat and horizontal position. MCTI is a remote testing site for the American Welding Society through Welders Testing and Training Institute of Allentown, PA. We offer the opportunity to take certification plate testing in S.M.A.W., G.M.A.W., G.T.A.W., and F.C.A.W. This will be offered only once per semester. Test materials are an additional cost. Class size is limited to seven (7) participants. Students are required to purchase their own welding hood, gloves, safety glasses, and all leather work boots. Students must use safety glasses, welding hood, and gloves. Test is given on final evening.
